Ryan Prime, Sustainability Director at Skanska will discuss Skanska’s experiences working with clients that have made sustainability a mandate and what that then means for the construction and engineering project team.

Kari Hewitt, Director of Sustainability at VHB and Marty Janowitz, Vice President of Sustainable Development at Stantec will discuss specific projects, the alternatives for green design under consideration, and the challenges, process and tools employed to arrive at the solution with the greatest value for their clients.

Michael Sanio, Director of Sustainability at ASCE, will reflect on the evolution of sustainability in the civil engineering practice and the trends that will affect the advance of greener infrastructure in the coming years.

About our Panelists

Kari Hewitt, ENV SP, LEED AP, CEM, is Director of Sustainability at VHB and a Senior Project Manager in the Environmental Planning & Sustainability Practice. She has extensive experience leading airports, local governments, and state agencies with resiliency planning, climate action and strategic energy planning, sustainability planning and reporting services, and stakeholder engagement. Kari is a subject matter expert who speaks regularly at industry conferences and events on the topics of resiliency and sustainability. In addition, Kari oversees VHB’s corporate sustainability program, which aims to integrate sustainability throughout the company’s projects and operations. She holds an M.A. in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning from Tufts University and a B.A. in Sociology from Smith College.

Marty Janowitz has been responsible for guiding Stantec’s efforts to become an exemplary model of sustainability in all its operations and with focus on evolving trends, leading initiatives to develop an integrated sustainability consulting practice. He serves as a member of the Sustainable Infrastructure Advisory Board of the Zofnass Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure Envision Review Board. As a hands-on practitioner, he was senior advisor on the first two Canadian projects to achieve Envision verification and award and for more than 10 other and ongoing Envision-related designs, reviews, and verifications. Janowicz was selected to be a member of first Canada’s Clean 50 – outstanding contributors to sustainable development and clean capitalism.

Ryan Prime is the national Sustainability Director for Skanska USA Civil.  In addition to his corporate responsibility Ryan manages the Skanska-Walsh JV Sustainability Program for the LaGuardia Airport Central Terminal Building Replacement Project.  Ryan has been with Skanska USA Civil since 2008 and has worked on some of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects in the NY Metro area including the Second Avenue Subway and the Navigational Clearance Project -Bayonne Bridge.  During his time with Skanska, Ryan has worked extensively in risk management and environmental compliance.  Since taking the role of Sustainability Director Ryan has served as chair of the Construction Industry Workgroup for the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure and has provided his expertise in the development and review of the Envision Rating System 2.0 and 3.0.  In addition he lectures at Columbia University on sustainable development for the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics.  Ryan holds a B.S. degree in Environmental Geoscience from Boston College and a M.E. degree in Ocean Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.

Michael Sanio, ENV SP, CAE, F.ASCE is the Director of Sustainability at the American Society of Civil Engineers where he is responsible for the society’s sustainability program globally. He has worked for the World Bank/Global Environment Facility, United Nations Environment Program, the World Engineering Partnership for Sustainable Development and Ontario Hydro. He is a member of the Engineers Forum for Sustainable Development and the staff liaison for the AAES IntAC Task Force on Global Sustainability, focused on providing the Engineer’s voice to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

John Williams has over 37 years of experience as an advisor to infrastructure development programs, 16 years as a principal owner of an international architecture and engineering company, and 13 years as an adjunct faculty member at Columbia University. He developed a series of awarding winning business practices and is a Member of CERES Presidents Council, is Chair Elect for the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, is a Subject Matter Expert for Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), served as Co-Chair of the West Coast Infrastructure Exchange Business Standards Committee, is a Member of the Partnership for New York City, and serves as a Trustee for the New York Foundation for the Arts.
